Truth Telling

One of the criticisms lobbed at us religious people is that we can be judgmental.

It's a righteous claim, for we can be. We're known for dismissing people for doing things that we do, too, often in secret. But the judgmental claim can be misused, and it often is. I worry these days that the judgmental label prevents some of us from speaking the truth. The call not to be judgmental is not a call to not to discern the bad from the good. I worry sometimes that the criticism of judgmentalism prevents some of us from calling out bad behavior and dysfunction. To not be judgmental does not mean not discerning what is faithful and what is not. These days I worry about people's discernment skills. Some things need to be named as wrong or sick. And to do so is not judgmental, but a matter of truth telling.
